Prairie Diagnostic Services Inc. is seeking an enthusiastic, motivated, organized, and skilled Veterinary Diagnostician to provide veterinary diagnostic services to a diverse client group from across Western Canada.
The successful candidate will eventually serve as approximately 50% anatomic pathologist and 50% microbiologist, but may begin as an anatomic pathologist. In the capacity of an anatomic pathologist, you will perform necropsies on carcasses and histopathology on necropsy samples and surgical biopsies, select and interpret appropriate ancillary tests, and provide diagnostic pathology reports to veterinary practitioners, researchers, animal owners, and government agencies. In the capacity of a microbiologist, you will supervise technologists to conduct diagnostic tests in areas such as bacteriology, virology, serology, immunology, parasitology, and molecular biology. When appropriate, you will provide clinically relevant comments on diagnostic cases to clients. You will also provide consultation on diagnostic testing to veterinarians and participate in disease surveillance projects for both public and private clients. Further, you are expected to guide test development and applied research activities in the laboratory.
You will work as part of an interactive diagnostic partnership between PDS, the Department of Veterinary Pathology, and the Department of Veterinary Microbiology at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine (WCVM) where duty in the different services is shared in order to meet both diagnostic and teaching requirements.  As part of this, some student supervision and case-based teaching may be required.  The species covered by the service are diverse and include a variety of farmed, companion, exotic and zoo animals. Development of special areas of interest within this diagnostic team will be encouraged.
Prairie Diagnostic Services Inc is a not-for-profit corporation jointly owned by the Government of Saskatchewan and the University of Saskatchewan. Its mandate is to provide veterinary diagnostic services to clients, support teaching and research at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine and provide information on disease detection and diagnostic trends to government(s).
The laboratory is located in the Western College of Veterinary Medicine on the beautiful University of Saskatchewan Campus in Saskatoon.  There are about seventy employees who provide a full range of services to clients including anatomic pathology, clinical pathology, microbiology and toxicology. The laboratory is ISO/IEC 17025 accredited by the Standards Council of Canada and is American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians (AAVLD) accredited. PDS is an active partner in the Canadian Animal Health Surveillance Network (CAHSN) of laboratories that provides disease surveillance and emergency response for foreign animal diseases within Canada.
PDS offers a competitive salary and benefits package.

The successful candidate will:
•    Have extensive knowledge of anatomic pathology and microbiology, and will be competent in the analysis, interpretation, and communication of results of various diagnostic tests, such as necropsy, histopathology, microbiology, basic clinical pathology, toxicology and serology.
•    Be familiar with modern data processing and communication methods used to report the results of diagnostic tests to submitters in a timely fashion.
•    Be able to work independently, as well as cooperatively, with others to build and maintain positive working relationships and ensure deadlines, goals, and objectives are met.
•    Be committed to a client centered culture of continuous improvement.
Qualifications include a DVM (or equivalent), and postgraduate training in veterinary anatomic pathology and diagnostic microbiology.  A Ph.D. degree is an asset. ACVP/ACVM board certification or eligibility is required, as is eligibility for membership in the Canadian and Saskatchewan Veterinary Medical Associations.
